Washington

Washington is a town in the cosmopolitan county of Tyne and Wear. It is also situated in the historic county of Durham in Northeastern England. It is along the north side of the River Wear listed under Chester-le-Street.

Earlier know as an area for very early coal mining and commercial activity and was linked with the Wear coal profession to London from the 17th century. It consists of the old town of Washington, along with its hall, which was the household seat of the forefathers of the first U.S. president, George Washington. This modern-day community is set out on a grid plan. New sectors were brought in to recruit the population from the neighboring Tyneside commercial belt as well as from neighboring former colliery villages in the wake of the coal industry's descent. The community has a wildfowl haven and also an arts centre.

Houghton le Spring

Houghton le Spring is a town in County Durham, in the developed north of the area, midway between Sunderland and Durham City. The district was first recorded in Norman times, though its name suggests an earlier beginning. It is a former mining community. The A690, the roadway from Sunderland to Durham, meets the A182 in Houghton at an uncommon interchange. Seaham town on the coastline of the North Sea lies approximately 5 miles due east. Fencehouses, Newbottle, and Hetton-le-Hole exist nearby.
